Heat Networks Funding

Over the past 4 years we’ve secured over £120m of funding for heat network clients. Below is a brief overview of each of the funding schemes currently available, but get in touch to discuss the best option for your organisation.

The Green Heat Network Fund

The Green Heat Network Fund follows on from the Heat Network Investment Project (HNIP) and the Green Heat Network Transition Scheme. It’s a key part of the Government’s Heat Network Transformation Programme (HNTP), designed to accelerate the transition to low or zero carbon heating and cooling technologies. Funding is available to public and private organisations assisting with both commercialisation and construction funding of new and existing heat networks across England.

Scotland’s Heat Network Fund

Scotland’s Heat Network Fund (SHNF) is the Scottish equivalent of the Green Heat Network Fund, offering funding to both public and private sector organisations via capital grants. Funding is available for both new schemes and the upgrading or expansion of existing heat networks, where the new section or upgrade relies on a zero direct emissions heat source, up to a maximum of 50% of the eligible capital costs. Companies can apply for commercialisation and/or construction financial support.

“Using cleaner technology to heat our civic buildings is helping to shield public sector organisations from costly fossil fuels, especially at a time of high global prices. This funding will bring significant savings for taxpayers of well over half a billion pounds each year by making public buildings cheaper to run, heat and cool, whilst supporting economic growth and jobs across the country.”

Heat Network Efficiency Scheme

The Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES) exists to financially support making existing heat networks more efficient. This applies to both communal and district heating projects. It’s also part of the Government’s HNTP and is available to both public and private organisations in England and Wales, targeting heat networks that are inefficient and in need of upgrading.

Heat Network Support Unit (Scotland)

Part of Heat and Energy Efficiency Scotland, the Heat Network Support Unit (HNSU) assists public sector organisations in Scotland who are at the pre-capital stages of heat network projects, such as undertaking feasibility studies or creating outline business cases. It specifically focuses on new heat network projects which utilise low or zero direct carbon emissions, however they may consider supporting the expansion of existing heat networks. Transitioning existing heat networks to low or zero carbon technologies is excluded. Communal heating systems are also excluded.
