Solar farms are large-scale solar projects and they have become major contributors to the UK’s decarbonisation. Sizes of solar farms can range from below 1MW to over 70MW, but are theoretically only restricted by the size of land available and the capacity of the grid. The scale of Solar is endless, an area of approximately 5 acres can produce approximately 1MW, but there are many factors which influence this. Whilst the size of the land is crucial, the topography is important as well. Solar farms need land which is flat, or sloping towards the south as this ensures the maximum solar yield.
Ground mounted solar installations of more than 9m2 will need planning permission, so all solar farms will come under the scrutiny of planners who will examine a range of factors when deciding whether to grant or refuse planning permission. Whilst brownfield sites, such as former landfills or demolished industrial premises can be ideal, planners will also look favourably on solar farms which are sited on arable land, but are often impressed by plans which continue to allow grazing on the site.
